Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana sends cryptic social media message as he recovers from 'fatigue'

Wesley Fofana's Chelsea career to date has been plagued by injury. After joining from Leicester City last summer, a serious knee injury ruled the defender out for the best part of four months.

The 22-year-old finally returned to first-team action for a 45-minute cameo during the Blues' defeat to Southampton last month. Since then, his return has coincided with an uptick in form for Graham Potter's side with a number of impressive performances, including starts in all three of Chelsea's recent wins against Leeds United, Borussia Dortmund and Leicester City.

Fofana also started the Blues' final game before the international break against Everton, but was withdrawn late on due to "fatigue". The French star was later spotted in the Stamford Bridge dugout with an ice pack on his right thigh, leaving many Chelsea supporters to fear the worst.

"Wes Fofana had to come off with fatigue, as he has had a long time out," Potter explained. "He was feeling his hamstring. Wes was fantastic and defended well."

Due to this concern, Fofana was withdrawn from the France national team for the upcoming internationals against the Netherlands and Republic of Ireland. After impressing upon his return to action, the 22-year-old was handed his first call-up to the senior team by Didier Deschamps on Thursday, but has now been denied the chance to notch up his first cap for Les Bleus.

Now, Fofana has issued a cryptic social media message to seemingly give an update on his condition. Taking to Snapchat, he was pictured in training with his finger to his lips, perhaps suggesting the situation isn't as concerning as initially feared.

This will come as a relief to Chelsea supporters, who will hope to have all their big-hitters available for the crunch Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid next month. Fofana now has just under a fortnight to recover for the Blues' next Premier League outing against Aston Villa when club football resumes.
