Chelsea defender Reece James makes Trent Alexander-Arnold claim

Reece James has played down talk of a rivalry between him and fellow England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The Chelsea and Liverpool defenders have both been called up to Gareth Southgate's latest England squad as the debate continues around who is better.

England’s World Cup qualifying campaign draws to a close during this international break as they face Albania and San Marino.

Alexander-Arnold is the main creative outlet in his Liverpool side, but he has struggled to replicate his club form on the international stage.

Southgate’s side have talent in abundance at right-back with Alexander-Arnold and James also battling Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier for the spot.

“I think each one of us have a different style of play,” James on the battle to be named England’s right-back.

“Trent’s obviously been at the top for quite a few years now and obviously Kyle Walker as well. The competition’s very tough and there’s obviously other full-backs that are not here as well that are also at a very good level.

“I’m competing with obviously very good players, so it’s quite tough and we just have to keep pushing each other.”

Alexander-Arnold, James and Walker are not only fighting for the England right-back spot, but also the Premier League title with their respective sides.

And James admits that it is “not easy” to put club rivalries to one side when players link up with England.

He said: “Of course when you come away you kind of have to put club rivalry aside. When we’re here, we’re one team and our aim is to win.

"No matter who we’re playing against, so we kind of have to put it aside and focus on our task here.”

Before he continued: “No, it’s not easy. We play most of our football for our clubs and we want to win wherever we are.”
