Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso nets superb free-kick in training ahead of Ajax game

Chelsea fans have long known defender Marcos Alonso has an eye for goal and the Spanish international showed it again in training on Monday.

Since moving to London from Fiorentina in 2016, the 28-year-old has netted 16 goals in the Premier League - more than any other defender in that time.

The ex- Real Madrid man has also become something of a set-piece specialist, with the left-back having produced some brilliant dead ball deliveries for the Blues over the past three years.

And Alonso showcased his ability once more in training on Monday, with the Europa League champions sharing the footage on Twitter .

In the clip, the 28-year-old can be seen lining up a free-kick while team mate Willy Caballero attaches himself to the crossbar and the post, forming a small postage-stamp target for Alonso to aim for.

After completing his run-up, the ex-Bolton defender can be seen sweetly striking the ball and watching on as it superbly curls past Caballero and into the net.

The Argentine stopper then detaches himself from the woodwork, before going over to congratulate the Spanish star on his superb set-piece.

And Caballero was not the only one to be stunned by the effort, with plenty of Chelsea fans also applauding Alonso for his strike on social media.

One commented: "I think he (Marcos) should change position. He has an eye for goal. He should be a striker."

Another posted: "This team needs more of this, our set piece should be creating tension for an opponent."

A third replied: "Best left back in the world."

Alonso will hope he can replicate the goal if given the chance on Wednesday when Chelsea head for Ajax in the Champions League.

Frank Lampard's men currently sit third in Group H after winning one and losing the other of their opening two games, while the Dutch side are top thanks to a 100 per cent record.
