Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta to join Roma on loan as Reece James gets first-team promotion

Roma have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign right-back Davide Zappacosta on a season-long loan.

Zappacosta is due to arrive in the Italian capital for a medical this week, with Roma making room for the Italy international by agreeing to sell Davide Santon to Real Mallorca after just one season at the Stadio Olimpico.

Standard Sport revealed last month that Chelsea were prepared to let Zappacosta leave because they want Reece James to be the main back-up to Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back .

The club also needed to cut the amount of foreign players in their squad to meet quota rules for the Premier League and Champions League.

James has been sidelined with an ankle injury sustained while playing for England Under-21s in June but is now close to full fitness.

Zappacosta joined Chelsea from Torino for an initial £23m in 2017, but he has started just 13 games in the Premier League since then.
