Chelsea defeat suggests Marcelo Bielsa must recall Rodrigo to Leeds United starting line-up

Last weekend's defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge saw Spanish forward Rodrigo Moreno feature for just 21 minutes as Leeds United lost 3-1 to the hosts.

It was a marked increase on the time he spent on the pitch against Everton the previous week however, a game in which he was introduced in stoppage time at the end of the second half.

There may not have been a need for the Spaniard's involvement against the Toffees, but against Arsenal and Chelsea, Marcelo Bielsa called on the 29-year-old to help him find a breakthrough.

On both occasions, Rodrigo was unable, along with the rest of the team, but did add something to the Leeds team - a dynamism and ingenuity that was perhaps lacking prior to his introduction.

It is clear from Rodrigo's composure on the ball that he is a top level footballer, and one of the most skilled in this Leeds team. The side is probably greater than the sum of its parts, thanks to the excellent coaching ability of Marcelo Bielsa and his staff, however this becomes all too apparent as Leeds struggle to break teams down.

Rodrigo has the ability to find sliding through passes, make diversionary, disguised runs to open space and manipulate opposition defences - arguably more so than any other Whites player.

Leeds had their fair share of opportunities against Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea, which is a testament to how far they have come under Bielsa. However, just two goals to show for it is a reflection of a side who have struggled to convert their best chances of late.

Leeds' combined xG for the three matches - according to Understat - was 6.10, suggesting the team should have scored six times across the three games based on the quality of the chances they created.

Just two goals represents an underperformance, and one which could cost them dearly if it is allowed to continue.

Rodrigo could certainly remedy that, either getting on the end of opportunities or creating clear-cut chances for his teammates. Mateusz Klich struggled particularly against Arsenal when it came to instant snap-shots that fell his way, while Jack Harrison's final ball was found wanting versus the Gunners and the Blues.

Spanish international Rodrigo was signed as a dual threat, an option in attack and midfield, who could support and supplement the attacking threat already at the club.

Over the past three games, he has played cumulatively less than one half of football, and has managed just three starts for the club in the league.

With a congested and packed Christmas fixture list, now could be the perfect time to introduce some fresh ideas into the Leeds starting XI, and Rodrigo certainly is not a bad place to start, or a bad option to have.
