Chelsea dealt major blow ahead of Wolves clash as Thomas Tuchel provides injury and Covid update

Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek injuries may lead to Thomas Tuchel doing "crazy stuff", the Chelsea boss admitted in his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to face Wolves.

Speaking after Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Everton on Thursday, in which Jorginho and Loftus-Cheek started in central midfield together, with the latter seemingly hurting his ankle midway through the first half, Tuchel admitted that both are a doubt for the upcoming fixture.

"Jorginho is a doubt for Sunday as he is in pain, Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a doubt because he is in pain," he said.

On other midfield options, Tuchel added: "Mateo Kovacic is back in his first training session today."

And on N'Golo Kante, who is working his way back from injury, Tuchel said he may have to do some "crazy stuff" due to the number of injuries at the position and the Christmas fixture list pile up.

"We need to find a balance now as we have put everything on Jorginho's shoulders," he said regarding Kante's possible return. "Ruben got injured yesterday, maybe we are forced to do the crazy stuff that we might not do."

Tuchel also provided an update on Kai Havertz, who missed the Everton match due to illness, though it was not known whether he had Covid-19 or not.

"No more positive tests but the lottery starts again tomorrow," he said. "We are happy Kai [Havertz] has a negative result and he is back in training."

On why Havertz was left out yesterday, Tuchel added: "Nobody can enter the training ground without a negative test," he explained. "We left Kai out because he felt unwell and we thought there was a possibility he might be positive. He was negative but we left him out, I had nobody on the bench left.

"We took this risk with consideration that health is first. But you can never be sure, tomorrow could be different."

Do you think the Premier League should pause to deal with the latest surge in Covid cases? Have your say

Chelsea travel to Wolves on Sunday in desperate need of a victory. After their 1-1 draw with Everton last night, the Blues slipped four points off the pace at the top of the Premier League, with Manchester City and Liverpool both winning midweek.

The Blues have now won just three of their last seven Premier League matches. They have not kept a clean sheet since November 23 and have conceded 11 goals in their last six games.

Tuchel is already set to be without Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Romelu Lukaku, all of whom tested positive for Covid-19 before the Everton match.
