Chelsea could have new penalty taker as Frank Lampard rejects Christian Pulisic claim

Here is your Chelsea morning digest for Friday, October 30.

Lampard to discuss penalty duty with Jorginho and Werner

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed he will have an “open chat” with Jorginho and Timo Werner over penalty-taking duties at the club.

The former missed from the spot against Krasnodar on Wednesday night, while the latter converted his penalty.

And Lampard has admitted he will be discussing the issue with his players.

“Well, I've left them today because they've slept for about four hours. So it's maybe not the best day for it,” he said in his press conference yesterday (Thursday).

“I've got no problem with either in terms of the penalty taking, not just Timo and Jorginho, we have other possibilities at the club.

“It will be something I will broach before Burnley because it's important as we've seen with history that we need it to be very clear going into the game who are the designated penalty-takers.

“But my confidence is in both of them, and I'll have a nice little open chat with both of them, and others, if needs be.”

American coach’s Pulisic claim refuted

Lampard has rebuked claims he was surprised by Christian Pulisic’s talent following his arrival at Chelsea.

The 22-year-old returns to the stadium where he scored a hat-trick last season - Turf Moor - as the Blues meet Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

And in the buildup to that game, Lampard has responded to comments from RB Salzburg’s American coach Jesse Marsch.

“I could see right away that Frank Lampard's idea of Christian Pulisic was shaped a lot by the fact that he was American and not that his football education came a lot from what has happened in Germany,” Marsch said, reflecting on a conversation after Pulisic scored twice in a pre-season friendly between Chelsea and Salzburg.

“Since then, I think Lampard has learned that Pulisic is a lot better than he gave him credit for.”

Asked about Marsch’s claims, Lampard said: “I was surprised that Jesse had managed to read my mind as well as he thought he did. He's recounted the conversation wrong. I have to put it correct.

“We played Salzburg and Christian scored two goals in pre-season. Fair enough, Jesse came up to me and said what a talented player Christian was, which I knew and agreed with.

"I spoke about the fact that equally it was so exciting to see how he would develop for us with the talent that he had. That was the conversation, Jesse managed to put it across slightly differently.”

Dyche claims Chelsea’s Champions League exertion could help Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has acknowledged the potential impact of Chelsea’s 4,000-mile round trip in the Champions League this week.

The Blues travel to Turf Moor on Saturday on the back of a long trip to play Krasnodar on Wednesday night.

And Dyche has identified that as a potential factor in this weekend’s game.

“They can make changes, a number, and it is more shifting styles and different types of quality,” he said.

“It might be helpful but you don't know until the whistle blows. If they are feeling some of the effects then that might be helpful, but if not we know the top sides are very strong.”
