Chelsea could have a new penalty taker against Liverpool if Frank Lampard makes selection call

Chelsea may have a new penalty taker this weekend if Frank Lampard chooses to leave out one of his key midfielders.

Jorginho is usually the boss' preferred choice to take spot kicks but there's a chance the Italy international could miss out against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Italian started in the Blues' first Premier League match of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion, and netted from the spot in the first half, as Lampard's side went on to claim a 3-1 win.

But the former Napoli star was handed a chance because of the suspension of Mateo Kovacic, after the Croatian was red carded in the FA Cup final.

He is now eligible for selection against Liverpool, which could see Lampard revert to his preferred partnership of N'Golo Kante and the former Real Madrid star.

With Jorginho potentially on the bench, that could then pave the way for new German forward Timo Werner to step up to the mark and become the club's new penalty taker on Sunday.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig earlier this summer, has a prolific record from 12 yards out.

The Germany international scored all five of his penalties for Leipzig last season; two of which came in the Champions League.

In total, he has scored 13 times from the spot and only missed on three occasions.

The last time was back in October 2018 in the Bundesliga.

Werner's recent record makes him the prime to fill the void if Jorginho misses out.

The former Napoli midfielder netted 10 times from the spot last season - seven for Chelsea and three for Italy - and didn't miss a single one.

He has only missed one his whole career. That came for Napoli in Serie A in November 2017.
