Chelsea confirm reason why pre-season friendly vs Drogheda United was postponed

Chelsea have confirmed a suspected positive Covid-19 case within the Blues training camp bubble in Ireland resulted in their pre-season friendly against Drogheda United.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were set to take on the League of Ireland Premier Division side at the Blues’ training camp base in Maynooth, County Kildare in their second friendly of the summer.

However, a couple of hours before the 6.30pm kick off, football.london learned that the match was in jeopardy but no reason was given for the possible cancellation.

Now, the Blues have released a statement confirming why the match was postponed.

A club spokesman said: “Earlier today, we had a possible positive Covid case which we are investigating. The individual has been isolated from the rest of the group.

“We also decided, as a precaution, to cancel tonight’s behind closed doors game against Drogheda.”

Chelsea had kept details of the behind-closed-doors game very quiet in the lead up, not naming Drogheda as the opponent until now.

The squad is expected to remain in Ireland for the time being as they were due to be there for a week-long training camp, having arrived on Tuesday.

It would mean that their second pre-season friendly will now be against Bournemouth on July 27 at the Vitality Stadium before The Mind Series of games against Arsenal and Spurs in early August.
