Chelsea confirm 'important' Laurence Stewart appointment to help complete major Todd Boehly plan

Chelsea have confirmed that Laurence Stewart will join the club as a technical director to focus on football globally, a new position with the west London side. The role appears to indicate some focus towards plans to form a multi-club model.

Stewart currently holds a role with AS Monaco as technical director and will join the Blues when his commitments to the Ligue 1 side end. Before this Stewart was global head of scouting at Red Bull Soccer International and was previously head of performance analysis at Manchester City.

The new appointment made clear his enthusiasm of building a 'world-class global sporting organisation' with the Blues. His focus on player pathways appears to reflect Todd Boehly's hope of building a development route the club can control.

Stewart said: "I’m delighted to be joining Chelsea and excited about the vision and direction of the club under the new ownership group. I am excited to join them to help them build a world-class global sporting organisation to consistently win on the pitch at the highest levels and provide player pathways to help develop our talent."

Stewart appears to have impressed his new employers during the recruitment process, and is deemed an important part of progressing the team.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said: "Laurence is an important appointment as we plan to build a deep sporting team that will collaborate closely. Laurence is a world-class football leader who understands talent management, data and scouting, player development and performance."
