Chelsea confirm fans' fears on Ruben Loftus-Cheek after injury against New England Revolution

Chelsea have confirmed that Ruben Loftus-Cheek has ruptured his archilles tendon, after he was forced from the field in the Blues' friendly against MLS side New England Revolution in the early hour of Thursday morning.

On a brief statement on their official website, the club confirm that the England international will undergo surgery on Thursday evening.

"Ruben Loftus-Cheek has seen a specialist today (Thursday) and will have surgery on his ruptured Achilles’ tendon this evening," the statement read.

"The Chelsea midfielder left the pitch during the second half of yesterday’s game in Boston, USA."

The 23-year-old joins fellow academy graduate Callum Hudson-Odoi on the sidelines, after the forward suffered the same injury just a few weeks ago.

Loftus-Cheek, who was pictured leaving the stadium on crutches, and will now undergo a period of recovery and rehabilitation following the surgery and will hope to be available in time for the start of the new season.

The injury is a blow to Maurizio Sarri ahead of the Blues' Europa League final against Arsenal later this month in Baku. It is however hoped that midfielder N'Golo Kante will be available for the clash after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury.
