Chelsea confident of beating transfer deadline to complete second January signing

Chelsea are confident of completing a deadline day move for Charlton Athletic striker Mason Burstow, football.london understands.

The 18-year-old, who has been on trial previously in the academy, has impressed for the League One side this season and has struck six goals in 14 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A number of Premier League sides have been tracking Burstow's progress in recent weeks but it is Chelsea who have moved to the front of the queue to secure his signing.

Burstow was meant to be in action for Charlton this evening against Portsmouth but was left out of the squad, with Johnnie Jackson confirming an offer had been received for the teenager.

He said: “A bid has come in from a Premier League club for Mason, so we’ve allowed him to go and chat with them.

"As far as I know nothing has been sort of done as yet, but obviously his focus was going to be elsewhere tonight, so we felt it best to let him go and have discussions and leave him out of the game.”

Should Burstow complete his move to Stamford Bridge before tonight's 11pm deadline, he will become the second signing made to bolster the club's academy ranks.

Earlier this month, Chelsea solved a long-term problem position with the signing of left-back Dylan Williams from debt-stricken Derby County.

Williams was highly rated at Pride Park and made his Blues debut for the Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup win over Liverpool on Saturday.

"I am absolutely delighted to have signed for one of the biggest clubs in the world," Williams said after joining the Blues for an undisclosed fee.

"Thank you so much for everything the staff and players have done at Derby County. I cannot wait to get started at Chelsea."
