Jamie Carragher believes the signing of Timo Werner will provide a boost for Chelsea and also send a message to the club’s stars that they mean business.
The Blues are believed to be moving nearer to signing the German after pushing ahead of Liverpool in the queue to sign one of the most highly-coveted young forwards in world football.
Sources have told football.london that there is now a "high probability" that Frank Lampard’s side will activate the striker's €55million release clause before it expires on June 15.
The latest now is that the Blues are expecting a deal for Werner to be concluded this week, with reports yesterday claiming that he has pulled out of RB Leipzig’s Champions League squad.
And Carragher believes that the signing of Werner is proof that Chelsea mean business and qualifying for the Champions League simply isn’t enough for them.
“No, I think it is really good for them. I think it will give everyone a boost,” he told Telegraph Football’s Q&A session.
“He doesn't come in right now, so no one has to worry right now. It is made easier by two players going on Bosman's. Is it Willian and Pedro?
“I don’t think the younger players have to worry too much as it still looks like they will have a front three or four of Pulisic, Abraham, Hudson-Odoi plus Timo Werner coming in.
“And I certainly don’t think it is the end for Chelsea. There has been mention of Havertz, whether they pull that one off, it looks like this morning Bayern Munich may do that.
“I think it will send a message to the rest of the squad that the top four isn’t good enough for us, we are going places.
“And with Frank’s history at the club, winning titles, European Cups, he is not coming to manage Chelsea to just try and qualify for the Champions League.”
