Chelsea complete first deals following Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital takeover

Chelsea have exercised options to extend the contracts of Jess Carter and Maren Mjelde until the summer of 2023, as the Blues announce their first contracts in the aftermath of Todd Boehly's takeover.

Boehly led a group that included Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjoerg Wyss that took ownership of the football club on Monday, after a three-month process following Roman Abramovich's announcement that he would sell Chelsea. The sanctions placed on the Russian also prevented the extensions of Carter and Mjelde's contracts.

These two deals are the first to be announced since academy midfielder Ben Elliott extended his contract in February, while Thiago Silva agreed terms with the club in January for the men's team to extend his stay for a further year. football.london understands that Cesar Azpilicueta triggered an appearance-based clause in his Chelsea contract while the club was operating under its special licence and is also tied to the Blues until 2023.

The new ownership group have made clear their intentions to invest across the Club, with Boehly citing his intention to build on the Blues success in the announcement of the takeover. He said: "Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud. Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the Club for the long-term and build on Chelsea's remarkable history of success."

Carter and Mjelde were part of Emma Hayes' squad that earned a domestic double in winning the FA Cup and Women's Super League in 2021/22. Carter has made 92 Chelsea appearances since signing from Birmingham in 2018 and featured on the right and in the centre of defence this season. The 32-year-old Mjelde has made 133 appearances since joining in 2018, returning from injury to help the Blues towards the end of the season, including in extra-time against Manchester City in the FA Cup.
