Chelsea close in on Everton star as Cesar Azpilicueta seen as ideal Kieran Trippier replacement

The January transfer window is finally here.

Chelsea are typically big spenders, and they may need to further strengthen their squad this month if something worthwhile presents itself in the market.

Equally, there may be opportunity for some players to leave in the near future.

The likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are out of contract at the end of the season, whilst some others have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge.

Atletico Madrid have identified Azpilicueta as an ideal candidate to fill the void set to be left behind by Kieran Trippier, who is set to join Newcastle, and they are pondering a formal approach for the Spain international in the coming weeks.

The report adds that the 32-year-old's versatility in being able to operate as either a right-back or centre-back is viewed as an attractive quality by Diego Simeone.
