By the summer of 2016, Hillary Clinton will have a second grandchild to gush over.
On Monday, Chelsea Clinton announced that she and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, are expecting a second child. The message included a black and white photo of one-year-old Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky reading a children’s book, Big Sisters are the Best.
“Next summer, Charlotte is going to be a big sister! Feeling very blessed & grateful this holiday season,” Chelsea wrote.

The Democratic frontrunner quickly replied, also on Twitter. “Your dad and I could not be happier for you, Marc, and Charlotte,” she wrote. “We’re so excited to meet our second grandchild!”
Should Clinton capture the Democratic nomination, the new baby would arrive in the heat of the general election cycle.

The former president and new-grandpa-to-be also weighed in on the news, declaring: “Christmas comes early!”
Charlotte has played a significant role in her grandmother’s presidential bid. In a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring the Democratic frontrunner, Clinton impersonator Kate McKinnon joked: “I have a one-year-old granddaughter. She calls me Madam President.”
Clinton has credited her granddaughter with inspiring her second run for the White House. On the campaign trail, the self-described “grandmother-in-chief” often shares anecdotes about Charlotte with voters.
“Luckily, my daughter and her husband are obviously well educated, they work hard, they’ll provide everything Charlotte needs,” Clinton has said at campaign events. “But what about all the other kids who were born on September 26 in 2014 in this country who deserve the same opportunities?’’
In her most recent book, Hard Choices, about her tenure as secretary of state, Clinton writes effusively about the joys of being a grandmother.
“It’s probably the world’s best job,” Clinton writes. “You get all the happiness of doting on a tiny child as she begins exploring the world, but without the responsibilities or anxieties of being a parent. I love every minute of it.”
