Chelsea clause means they face hefty cost if they win Champions League

Chelsea could end up forking out a hefty amount if they end up winning the Champions League this summer.

The Blues knocked Real Madrid out in the semi-finals after beating them 3-1 on aggregate, including a convincing 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner and Mason Mount scored in west London on Wednesday to set up a final against Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola, who last won the tournament with Barcelona in 2011, is gunning to land the title for City's first time.

But they must beat a tough Chelsea, who have become a nuisance to play against since Thomas Tuchel took over in January.

As well as shoring up their leaky defence, there are signs their expensively-assembled attack is starting to click.

Not least Kai Havertz, who doubled his goal tally in the Premier League against Fulham last week after scoring a brace.

And he was in fine form against Madrid as well, hitting the post twice - one with a delicate chip that actually saw Werner score the opener.

After arriving for €80m (£72m), all eyes were on Havertz last summer - who joined for a club-record fee.

But that total could shoot up to €100m (£87m) if a number of clauses are met during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Amongst the clauses is one which will see Chelsea forced to put their hands in their pockets again if they win the Champions League.

According to Kicker, that clause is worth at least a million euros and the deal could already be edging towards the €100m mark if the Blues lift the prestigious trophy.

However, that would likely be a small price to pay for Roman Abramovich, who would love to see his club land the title once again.

Chelsea last tasted success in the competition in 2012 in unbelievable settings after dramatic winners over Napoli, Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the final.

This year, the Blues have looked a lot more in control after worthy victories over Atletico Madrid, Porto and Real - with City in their sights.
