Chelsea charged twice by FA after Liverpool handball controversy

Chelsea have been charged twice by the Football Association for failing to control players during their controversial draw at Liverpool.

And the Londoners could be in danger of being punished with a points deduction having already been hit by the same rap seven times in the previous seven years.

Chelsea were unhappy when, after a VAR check, Reece James was dismissed for handling a goalbound Sadio Mane effort on the line during first-half injury time in Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Anfield.

Visiting players surrounded referee Anthony Taylor and then clashed with a number of Liverpool opponents after Mohamed Salah netted the Reds' equaliser from the spot.

Chelsea's complaints continued after the half-time whistle was blown, with the European champions now in the dock over the two separate incidents.

An FA statement said: "Chelsea FC has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E20.1 following their Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC on Saturday.

"It is alleged that Chelsea FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 48th minute of the first half and following the half-time whistle."

The Stamford Bridge side have until Friday to respond to the charge.

Chelsea have regularly been in trouble with authorities in recent years for failing to control their players, most recently after a bad-tempered finish to their home Premier League win over Leicester City in May.

The Londoners, along with Leicester, were fined £22,500 by the FA the following month.

However, the FA may taken a dim view at Chelsea's repeat offending with a points deduction among the punishments they can impose, which could havean early impact in the Premier League title race.
