Chelsea captain Millie Bright has announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 32, concluding a decorated career that saw her become the club’s longest-serving player.
The defender, who joined the Blues ahead of the 2015 season after starting her career with Doncaster Belles, made 314 appearances and secured an astonishing 20 trophies during her 11 years at Stamford Bridge.
Bright expressed her readiness for a new chapter, stating: "Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I’m now ready to say goodbye to playing football. I’ve given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time, and I’m ready to go into a new era. I’m always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way."
Her retirement follows her decision to step down from international duty in October 2025, having earned 88 caps for England. A European Championship winner on home soil in 2022, Bright also captained the Lionesses to the World Cup final the following year.
At Chelsea, Bright’s impressive trophy haul includes eight Women’s Super League titles, six FA Cups, and four League Cups, contributing to treble-winning campaigns in 2021 and 2025.
Last November, she set a new Women’s Super League appearance record, surpassing Jordan Nobbs’ 210 games.
Chelsea confirmed Bright will remain involved with the club, taking on roles as a trustee of their foundation and a club ambassador.
A tribute is planned for her during Chelsea’s final WSL match of the season against Manchester United on 16 May at Stamford Bridge.
Before that match, Chelsea are due to play Leicester City away from home on Sunday, before facing WSL leaders Manchester City in a mouthwatering FA Cup semi-final clash on 10 May.
Should they win that match, another cup final at Wembley would await.
