Chelsea can prevent Lucas Digne risk with Thomas Tuchel's January transfer 'priority'

After starting so brightly for Chelsea this season, Ben Chilwell is out after picking up an Achilles injury and needing surgery on it. Marcos Alonso has been on the wings to come in and help but some Chelsea fans feel the club need another left-back option.

Carefree Chelsea’s writer and presenter Anita Abayomi and social producer Jai McIntosh spoke to football.london's Chelsea correspondents, Sam Inkersole (SI) and Adam Newson (AN) on Friday afternoon's Back Page show about whether Everton's Lucas Digne would be a good option for the club to consider.

AN: “He’s on Chelsea’s potential list of wingback signings but I don’t think he’s at the top of it. I genuinely believe and Tuchel mentioned that his first priority is to get Emerson back from his loan in Lyon.

“But, there’s not a break clause in that or a recall clause. Which you can call shortsighted by Chelsea. But, they are trying to still find a solution to that and it would be Tuchels preferred one.

“He knows the player. Emerson knows the squad and London. Who wouldn’t need any time to fit in? Lucas Digne is someone Chelsea are looking at but not pursuing heavily.

“Because they are trying to work on an internal issue with Emerson where they hopefully won’t have to spend a lot of money.”

SI: “I think he’s a step up on Marcos Alonso. But, I don’t know if it’s just the January transfer window and there’s not much going on. But, Digne doesn’t have the profile that all of this attention is getting him.

“Yes, he is a good player, we saw that Everton. He was at Barcelona, but I don’t know if this is the lack of stuff going on around the transfer window that this is being blown up.

“He’s not had the best track record with injuries as well. That will be a huge concern for Chelsea going forward, considering he’s replacing a player who is injured.”
