Chelsea's Nathan Ake buy-back clause explained as Manchester City confirm £41m transfer

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Nathan Ake for £41million and that has implications for Chelsea.

The Cherries were relegated to the Championship o the final day of the Premier League season and that is expected to lead to a number of their players moving on to pastures news.

Bournemouth have a number of high-profile commodities, and one has left the Vitality Stadium already.

The Blues, along with Manchester United, have been linked with a move for Ake this summer, but it appears City have won the race, providing they can agree personal terms.

Ake moved to Bournemouth from Chelsea in 2017 on a £20million deal.

And his stellar performances for the Cherries led to Chelsea being interested in re-signing him.

Ake debuted for the Blues as a teen all the way back in 2012, but only managed 17 appearances in five years before being allowed to join Bournemouth.

And when selling him, Chelsea inserted a buy-back clause into the deal he signed with Bournemouth. That clause stated that the Blues could re-sign him for double the figure - £40million - if they wanted him back.

There seems to be some confusion as to when the clause expired. It was believed to be January, but then reports surfaced claiming that it was instead this summer.

Ake will be playing his football at the Etihad next season, with City having paid £1million more than what Chelsea would have had to fork out back in January.

However, Bournemouth had to allow Chelsea to match the £41million offer from City before selling him. That is according to TalkSport who insist that was part of the deal that saw Ake move to the south coast in 2017.

But with Ake being unveiled at City, it's clear the west Londonders passed on the option.
