Chelsea break key transfer policy to secure David Luiz's future

David Luiz has signed a new two-year deal at Chelsea in a break to the Blues's usual over-30 tradition.

With his current deal running out this summer, the 32-year-old admitted that he had been in talks with the club over extending his time with the Blues.

While traditionally with over 30s players Chelsea only give a maximum of one-year deals, Chelsea have instead handed the Brazilian two years to stay at Stamford Bridge.

That rule has been a hot topic over the years at Chelsea, with players like Cesc Fabregas heading out the door due to the fact that they are not offered more of a deal.

However, with the fact that Chelsea are staring down the barrel of a two-window transfer ban and the potential that the Blues are not able to bring players in this summer, Luiz could be a key figure.

He has started 35 Premier League matches for the Blues this season under Maurizio Sarri, having been frozen out of the side by Antonio Conte last season.

Meanwhile, Sarri had been keen to keep him at the club for the long-term so that he could help the Italian during his reign at the Blues.

But it does come as a surprise that they have changed their policy in order to keep the 32-year-old until 2021.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: ‘We are delighted David Luiz will be staying with the club.

'He has set the perfect example to those around him throughout the campaign and been a huge influence on and off the pitch.

‘With the Europa League final still to come, we hope to finish off the season with silverware and David will be central to that success in Baku and beyond.’
