Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel reveals who made tactical switch for match-winning moment vs Malmo

Thomas Tuchel revealed he was not the one responsible for the tactical change at half-time that proved crucial for Chelsea in their 1-0 win over Malmo on Tuesday.

The Blues were the better side in their Champions League group stage clash in Sweden, but only managed to find the back of the net once.

Callum Hudson-Odoi provided the assist, running down the right wing and whipping a low cross into the box for Hakim Ziyech to finish. However, they were on opposite flanks before the break.

The wingers switched sides in the second half and the change proved crucial as just 11 minutes after the re-start the Blues were in front.

On the game-winning tactical shift Tuchel said: “All the credit to my assistant, he had the idea at half time.

“We had the feelings that maybe when we enter into the spaces behind their back five, they defended a low block, we would lose seconds if Callum or Hakim had to switch back.

“We thought maybe we can enter and save important tenths of a second.”

The win took Chelsea to nine points, keeping the pressure on Juventus at the top of Group H with the two sides set to battle it out for top spot.

Tuchel admitted how important it was to keep pace with Juve after their third group win out of four.

He added: “We needed the result, we expected the result, we delivered, we had a lot of touches but was maybe not clinical enough yet.

“We wanted to increase the intensity level in the second half. We were able to use this one moment, this position, then be clinical enough to score and then we had enough chances for a second one.

“The control was on our side. We did not suffer through difficult situations in our box, we never lost concentration.”
