Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel noted three areas of improvement after taking over from Frank Lampard

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel apparently decided on three areas of improvement he needed to act upon after taking over from Frank Lampard.

Tuchel has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Stamford Bridge, having gone unbeaten from his first eight games.

The Blues are playing his style of football after he tinkered around with the team's formation and gave players new roles - including Callum Hudson-Odoi's revitalisation at right wing-back.

And according to The Athletic, he decided how to lead the team based on three observations he made about the squad.

He apparently decided they needed to improve their structure, defensive line and counter-pressing.

Since then, Tuchel has decided on a structure of five men at the back, therefore improving the defensive line.

That five-man defence is the core of his team, and has been the structure he's gone with in his opening eight games in charge.

It seems to have worked, as Chelsea have kept clean sheets in six of their eight games since Tuchel took over.

Their counter-pressing and high press has also been used to good effect so far, as Chelsea have dominated possession in every game of Tuchel's reign.

Chelsea have strength in depth up front, and this was apparently another thing the incoming boss recognised after taking over from Lampard.

The Blues spent big in the 2020 summer transfer window to improve their attacking options.

Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both arrived for a combined £140million, with Hakim Ziyech also joining beforehand.

Since Tuchel's arrival, Chelsea have outscored their opponents 10-2, including wins over Atletico Madrid and Tottenham.

Despite their new-found defensive strength, Chelsea had kept just two clean sheets in their previous nine games, so clearly something is working for the new boss.
