Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel admits he would have been interested in Newcastle United job

Thomas Tuchel admits he would have had some interest in the Newcastle United manager's job had he been contacted about it.

After Alan Pardew's departure at the end of 2014, there was plenty of speculation over who would take over at the Magpies whilst John Carver was appointed on an interim basis.

Steve McClaren was eventually given the role in the summer of 2015 but there had been speculation that the Magpies were interested in Tuchel.

Prior to McClaren's appointment, Tuchel was out of work after a successful time in charge at Mainz in what was his second managerial role.

He eventually succeeded Jurgen Klopp as Borussia Dortmund manager, going on to manage Paris Saint-Germain before taking charge of Chelsea last month.

Ahead of his side's game against Newcastle on Monday, Tuchel has addressed speculation over how close he came to taking over at St James's Park.

Whilst he has denied that there was ever any contact from the Magpies, he says it would have been a job that may have piqued his interest due to his knowledge of Newcastle's history.

"I was never in contact with anybody in Newcastle," he said to Football.London.

"If they had contacted me there would have been a chance because I’m a football fan, I know the stadium, I know the guys who played for Newcastle, I know the shirt, but I never had any contact with any official of Newcastle."

Whlst Tuchel went on to enjoy plenty of success with Dortmund and PSG, the Magpies' choice of McClaren was less successful.

He lasted just 31 games in charge before leaving in March 2016 and being replaced by Rafa Benitez with the club on course to relegation to the Championship.
