Chelsea boss Frank Lampard responds to Jose Mourinho's criticism following heavy Man United loss

Frank Lampard has opened up on how he views criticism from the likes of his former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who hammered the ex-England international in the wake of the 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on Sunday.

Lampard was speaking to BT Sport prior to the European Super Cup clash against Liverpool when he discussed at length how he took the comments from Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager turned pundit criticised Lampard for not starting more experienced players such as Olivier Giroud, N'Golo Kante and Marcus Alonso at Old Trafford.

Mourinho told Sky Sports after the game: "If Kante can play 30 or 35 minutes, he can start the game. And then if he lasts only one hour, he lasts only one hour.

"My feeling is that today they had a possibility to play with more know-how.

"Alonso was on the bench, Kante was on the bench, Giroud was on the bench, and to come to Old Trafford, even if this is not the huge Manchester United that used to scare people, it’s Manchester United."

However, Lampard has responded by insisting he does not get 'too caught up' in what the critics think.

"If you are going to take on a Chelsea job, it will be judged and analysed. You must not get too caught up in all that. I understand that people such as Jose has to speak about how he feels," Lampard told BT Sport.

"What I will always do is protect my players, especially the young ones. I have the inside insight. This isn't just a one pundit thing. You have to switch off to everyone slightly."

It was a tough start for Lampard at Old Trafford and whilst the 41-year-old admits there will be some hard days to come for the Blues, he is adamant that he will ultimately succeed in the job.

"People understand how much I feel about this club. I will be judged in the end on results. I am very happy with the squad but we must understand it is a work in progress down to the transfer window ban," Lampard added.

"Manchester United was a tough afternoon but we have to be patient. I have 21 years of playing professionally. I have strong ideas on how I want to play. I will try my best to bring that to the table."
