Chelsea 'ask overseas players to return this week' ahead of Premier League restart

Chelsea have reportedly requested that their players who are overseas return to the UK this week ahead of a proposed Premier League restart.

Clubs are keen to begin full-time training again in May with a view to the season getting back underway potentially as early as June 8.

Several of the Blues squad travelled abroad after the coronavirus outbreak suspended Premier League action last month including Willian, Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri.

But Chelsea have now asked those players to return to the UK with a flexible deadline of Sunday May 3, according to ESPN FC.

They would then likely need to self-isolate for two weeks in line with government guidelines, by which time a return to training may be close.

Some clubs have already re-opened their training facilities to first-team stars, including Arsenal and Tottenham, while operating strict social-distancing measures.

Premier League clubs will meet via conference call on Friday to further discuss plans for the season to resume, with the government also keen for a restart.

Games would take place behind closed doors and potentially at neutral venues, while there are also concerns about fans gathering to watch matches which could be screened on free-to-air TV.

The Premier League is also understood to be concerned over a potential public backlash over testing plans, given a continued shortage on the NHS frontline.

Any resumption to the campaign is unlikely to be rubber-stamped before the government's review of the current lockdown on May 7.
