Chelsea are three transfers from completing squad overhaul but issue remains for Todd Boehly

Chelsea have spent over £500million in the last two transfer windows so you could be forgiven if you assumed they were going to have a relatively quiet summer.

However, with just six games of the Premier League season left to play and the summer transfer window on the horizon, that does not appear to be the case. The club are working behind the scenes in order to identify the right profiles for what looks like another busy period in terms of incomings.

football.london understands the prospect of bringing in a goalkeeper, defensive midfielder and central striker have all been discussed behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge. Kepa Arrizabalaga has failed to convince as first-choice goalkeeper this season ever since taking Edouard Mendy's spot following a string of mistakes from the Senegal international.

The likes of Dean Henderson, David Raya, Jordan Pickford and Gregor Kobel have all been spoken about as Chelsea search for their long-term No.1. Andre Onana of Inter Milan is someone the club have a long-term interest in, stretching back to the Roman Abramovich days.

As things stand, there is no clear favourite in terms of a new goalkeeper to bring in, but a number of players are being looked at. It's a similar situation in the centre of midfield. Despite bringing in Enzo Fernandez for north of £100million in January, the Blues are still looking to add more depth to the centre of midfield especially with the likelihood of some players leaving in the summer.

Arsenal appear to be the front-runners for the signature of Declan Rice in the summer with the West Ham United midfielder looking increasingly likely to leave the London Stadium. However, a source has told football.london not to rule Chelsea out of proceedings, with the Blues very much still keen on the England international.

There are alternatives to Rice, though, with Chelsea unable to provide European football like Arsenal will be. Edson Alvarez of Ajax is a long-term target and was almost signed last summer. He is very much still on the radar for the west Londoners.

Not a defensive midfielder, but Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister continues to be monitored with every indication that the Argentina World Cup winner will leave the Amex Stadium in the summer. Romeo Lavia of Southampton is of interest, too, after an impressive season down on the south coast for the struggling Saints.

In the striker department, Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen is really admired by the club. With 26 goals in all competitions this season, though, there's an acceptance from Chelsea that his signature might be difficult to retrieve without Champions League football at Stamford Bridge next season.

Jonathan David of Lille is another player that has been mentioned at the club. The 23-year-old Canadian has just over two years remaining on his contract in Lille and after another breathtaking season in Ligue 1, his stock is very high right now.

Whoever the club do end up signing, though, they need to make sure the right man is in place to lead them all. Mauricio Pochettino is the clear front-runner to become the new head coach of Chelsea but it's understood there is no agreement between the two parties just yet.

Negotiations, though, have been very positive and significant progress has been made. The Argentine would prefer to take over at the end of the season and Chelsea are prepared to wait in order to get their man.
