Chelsea announce Willian and Pedro contract extensions until end of season

Chelsea have announced Willian and Pedro will see out the Premier League season with the club after signing short-term contract extensions.

Clubs had until midnight on Tuesday to confirm which players on expiring contracts - traditionally June 30 - were staying on for a further month to conclude the delayed campaign.

An official club statement read: "As a result of the global pandemic and the subsequent delayed conclusion to the campaign, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to be allowed to enter into short-term contract extensions with players whose deals were due to expire at the end of this month.

"Willian and Pedro were among those affected, and they and the club have now mutually agreed to extend contracts until the finale of the current season.

"It means they will be available for our remaining Premier League fixtures in 2019/20, as well as any future involvement in the FA Cup and Champions League."

Pedro will join Roma at the end of his contract while Willian also looks set to leave after failing to come to a long-term extension during talks over the season.

The Blues have offered the 31-year-old a two-year deal, though he has been holding out for a three-year-deal and could stay in London with Tottenham and Arsenal both having kept tabs on the situation.

Olivier Giroud and Willy Caballero, two others who would have been out of contract on June 30, have already seen their contracts extended by a year.
