Chelsea and Manchester United in battle with AC Milan to sign Italian star this summer

Gianluigi Donnarumma's contract is set to expire this summer and with no deal agreed yet with AC Milan his agent has claimed to have held talks with both Chelsea and Manchester United over a possible free-transfer for the Italian star.

The goalkeeper's agent - Mino Raiola - is negotiating a new deal with the Milanese club but has so far failed to come to an agreement with the club over Donnarumma's wage demands.

AC Milan have offered the Italian no.1 a wage rise from £5million-a-season to £6.5million but the keeper is believed to be after a deal worth a staggering £8.5 million.

If no deal for the 22-year-old is reached, he is available for a free transfer at the end of his contract and a move to England is of interest to him according to Duncan Castles speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast:

"Our information is that both Chelsea and Manchester United have been in talks with Raiola about Donnarumma.

“It looks like Donnarumma has an opportunity to move to England, should he choose to.

“Accompanied by the commission that Raiola seeks and would want for free transfer of such a valuable asset.

“There is an opportunity for either club and others to secure Donnarumma on a longer-term contract without their being a fee."

Donnarumma is reported to favour staying in his native Italy at the club has been with since the age of 14, but if a deal cannot be made with Milan, Chelsea and Manchester United could be set to battle it out for one of the world's top goalkeepers.

Chelsea have spent big on keepers in the recent price, including a world-record £71million for a stopper in 2018 when they brought in Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao. Kepa is still one of the club's highest earners and any move for Donnarumma would surely spell the end fo the Spaniard at the Blues.

Kepa has already fallen to the role of no.2 with Edouard Mendy joining the club in September and instantly replacing the error-prone Spanish international.

Mendy, 29, has settled well at Chelsea, and were the deal for Donnarumma not to go through it is unlikely that the Blues would look elsewhere for a goalkeeper with the Senegalese international established as the club's current no.1.
