Chelsea and Man City fans attending Champions League final face strict one-day 'bubble' journey

Manchester City and Chelsea fans flying to the Champions League final will have to fly in and out on the day of the match and stay in a "bubble" while in Porto.

The Portuguese government has announced that the 12,000 supporters they will allow to attend the May 29 showpiece at the Estadio Do Dragao will be kept away from the general Portuguese population, corralled in a fan zone before the match before being taken straight back to the airport afterwards.

Both clubs will get 6,000 tickets for the final after it was announced that the venue will be switched from Istanbul, after Turkey was placed on the UK government's travel "red list" last week after suffering a spike of Covid infections.

Uefa wanted to take the final to Wembley, but the UK government quashed that idea by insisting that VIPs, staff, officials and broadcasters from around the world would not be exempt from the quarantine rules currently in place.

Uefa felt that they could not stage the final in England given those restrictions, so Portugal was selected as a viable alternative.

Portugal's cabinet affairs minister Mariana Vieira da Silva told of the strict rules at a press conference today, saying: “Those who come to the final of the Champions League will come and return on the same day, with a test done, in a bubble situation, on charter flights.

“There will be two fan zones and from there they will be moved to the stadium and from the stadium to the airport, being in Portugal less than 24 hours."

But any fans who travel to Porto to enjoy the occasion - but not attend the match - will not be subject to the strict rules, and will be able to socialise under the normal Covid restrictions.

“Obviously those coming by plane will comply with the established rules and security measures will be put in place as happened in Lisbon last year," she said.
