Chelsea and Liverpool set deadline to activate Timo Werner's release clause ahead of summer deal

The future of Timo Werner was one of the hot topics in the January transfer window, amid links with Chelsea and Liverpool.

The Germany international has consistently been linked with a move to the Premier League amid interest from Chelsea and Liverpool, while Bayern Munich have also been heavily touted for a move for the forward.

However, recent days have seen the links with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool ramp up and a crucial piece of information has now emerged in the battle for his services.

Bild report that a deal for Werner's services has to be completed swiftly as his release clause with the Bundesliga side is set to expire at the end of April.

The release clause allows a prospective buyer to secure him for between €55milion and €60milion, depending on Leipzig’s final Bundesliga position - but time is running out.

From the end of April, Leipzig can demand whatever price they feel is necessary for the 23-year-old, which is likely to be an astronomical figure given his form this season.

Werner has struck 20 goals in 21 matches for the Bundesliga title-chasers, as well as six assists, and has also hit three goals in six Champions League matches.
