Chelsea and Frank Lampard handed massive injury boost ahead of Manchester United trip

Frank Lampard has a number of injury concerns ahead of next weekend's Premier League opener against Manchester United.

N'Golo Kante is the biggest doubt as he's yet to feature in pre-season as he continues to be bothered by the injury which almost kept him out of the Europa League final win over Arsenal at the end of May.

Willian, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James are also in the treatment room at the club's training base in Cobham.

Another player currently out of action is centre-back Antonio Rudiger who has been sidelined with a meniscus injury, ironically in the corresponding fixture at Old Trafford towards the end of last season.

Rudiger has been doing some light running outside at the training ground all summer and wasn't expected to play much part of the pre-season campaign.

In addition, he won't be taking to the field at the 'Theatre of Dreams' a week on Sunday, but the German international appears to be closing in on a return to full training.

He has since taken to social media and issued a positive update about his progress.

"Always focused on progress," he tweeted.

"Taking another big step next week: training with the team again."

Rudiger's injury hands Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma a chance to start the season alongside David Luiz at the heart of Chelsea's defence.

That's presuming Lampard keeps faith in the Brazilian.

If the decision was up to ex-Blues manager Jose Mourinho then the Frenchman would start against the Red Devils and go on to be the club's first-choice central defender.

"Chelsea needs a centre-back - Kurt Zouma! You don't need to buy, you don't need to spend, Mourinho said. "Zouma!

"He's champion of England, he played for Chelsea, played for Stoke in the Premier League, played for Everton in the Premier League, played for France.

"He's your player, he's on loan, where are you going to buy a better player than him?

"You already have him."
