Chelsea and Frank Lampard handed major injury scare ahead of Newcastle United visit

Chelsea could be facing a central defensive injury crisis ahead of next weekend's Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

Andreas Christensen was spotted holding his groin as he limped off during Denmark's 1-0 win over Switzerland in an Euro 2020 qualifier on Saturday evening and he could be doubtful for club action.

As of yet there as been no word on the extent of the defender's injury.

Christensen being injured would leave Blues head coach Frank Lampard down to just two fit senior centre-backs in Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma.

With that said, Cesar Azpilicueta is also an option as is youngster Marc Guehi.

Antonio Rudiger is back in training, although it remains to be seen if he will be in contention to face the Magpies.

Whilst he was left on the bench for games against Lille and Southampton, Christensen can boast about being part of the back-line which has kept the one and only clean sheet this season.

That came in the 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion last month which remains the Blues' only win at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League thus far.

But will he west London outfit be without the Denmark international as they look to make it five wins in a row across all competitions when they host Steve Bruce's side?

Christensen is the second Chelsea player to suffer an injury scare in the past 24 hours after midfielder N'Golo Kante withdrew from the France line-up to face Iceland.

Although, Didier Deschamps has said he doesn't think it's too serious.

Nevertheless, some Blues fans aren't too happy about the prospect of losing another key player to injury.
