Chelsea and Frank Lampard handed major boost as Liverpool miss Thiago registration deadline

Liverpool are still waiting to confirm the signing of Thiago Alcantara.

The midfielder is set to sign a four-year deal with the reigning Premier League champions and become the Reds' second summer signing after Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

However, Jurgen Klopp won't have his new £25m signing available to him for this Sunday's clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

That's because the deadline has now passed.

According to Premier League rules, players must be registered by their clubs by 12pm on the Friday before the weekend's fixtures.

As a result, the relevant paperwork needed to have been completed by midday today [Friday, September 18] for Thiago to make his league bow against the Blues.

In truth, the Reds were always in a race against time to complete the signing of Thiago if they wanted him to feature against Frank Lampard's side and it would appear they have lost the battle.

Unless the deal was done behind the scenes before midday then there will be no debut for the Spain international this weekend.

And judging by Klopp's comments, the deal is not yet complete.

"There's nothing really to say. It's not official until it's announced and I'm not an announcer," he said in his pre-match press conference. "It looks quite promising!!!!

"My hands are tied pretty much. It might be useful for fans to look at LFC channels over today."

No Thiago for Liverpool is certainly a boost for the Blues and head coach Frank Lampard.

The 29-year-old is regarded as one of the finest central midfielders in Europe right now and pulled the strings for Bayern Munich against Chelsea in the Champions League as recently as last month.

But because he hasn't been registered in time, he won't get the chance to replicate such a performance.
