Chelsea 4-4 Ajax: Reece James says fans who left early made 'a big mistake'

Chelsea defender Reece James says the fans who left their thrilling 4-4 Champions League draw with Ajax early made ‘a big mistake’.

Frank Lampard’s side came from 4-1 down to draw with the Dutch champions, who had two men sent off in a bizarre second half incident that also saw the Blues awarded a penalty.

James was sent on in place of Marcos Alonso at half-time, with Chelsea trailing 3-1, despite Ajax having only had one shot on target, as both Tammy Abraham and Kepa Arrizabalaga scored unfortunate own goals.

Ajax extended their lead through Donny van de Beek, but had Daley Blind and Joel Veltman shown second yellow cards within seconds of one another to completely turn the game on its head.

It was James who eventually scored the equaliser with a crisp low strike, but some Blues fans missed it, having left Stamford Bridge with their side looking beaten.

"That was a big mistake,” James told BT Sport.

"We livened up in the second half and managed to get back in the game.

"It was a crazy game, bringing it back to 4-4.

"They were hard to break down and we scored a few when they went down to nine men."
