Chef shows TikTok fans how you're really meant to chop an onion

A top chef has revealed a clever trick to chopping your onions just right.

Michelin-trained chef Poppy O'Toole has revealed to her TikTok fans the secret to chopping your onions properly.

And according to the cooking guru, known to her 1.4 million TikTok followers as Poppy Cooks, Poppy has revealed you need to cut your onion no less than six times, The Daily star has reported.

Poppy said: "This is one of the first techniques you learn when becoming a chef."

A video demonstration shows Poppy cutting off the top of the onion and then slicing it in half lengthways and peeling it.

She warns not to slice through to the root and tells people to cut vertically "about six times".

"Then you warn to turn your onion and start chopping it, you want to use your knuckle as a protector or else you'll cut your fingers, and then you cut it just towards the root.

"And there you have a finely chopped onion."

The video has been watched more than 3 million times and viewers were incredibly impressed with the method, calling it a game-changer.

One fan said: "Oh my God I've always wanted to know this magic I've been doing it wrong the whole time by chopping both sides."

A second viewer commented: "Hahaha I love cooking and never did that. I just destroy the onion in pieces but this way is definitely better."

Other viewers recommend using a very sharp knife to cut the onion and said the blade would slip if the method was attempted using a blunt one.

This comes after  Poppy revealed how to make perfect chip shop-style chips  and left viewers' mouths drooling.

She also gave an eye-popping demonstration on  how to make tender and buttery potato fondant  that looked like a dream come true.

Poppy's fans have also raved about her crispy  roast potato method,  calling the recipe "unbelievable".
