LUCKNOW: Celebrity chef Ranveer Singh Brar visited Lucknow Model Jail to provide tips to spice up the meals being served to inmates on Monday. Brar has been roped in by the prison department and National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBD) which is the premier wing of the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship.
Director General of Prisons, Anand Kumar, said that the celebrity chef interacted with the prisoners and gave them tips for adding value to the food they prepare and ensure that it is not only tasty but also nutritious.
“Now, a team of culinary experts will descend to the prison and train the prisoners for a period of over two months,” said Kumar.
The chef was given a warm welcome inside the premises of Lucknow Model Jail with honour given by the official jail band.
Brar visited the kitchen, dining room of the prison and then interacted with the prisoners over lunch.
He advised them to soak ‘dal’ (lentils) in water overnight to cook.
He adds that lentils will become at least twelve times more nutritious, tasty, and delicious to eat and will take less time in cooking.
He further advised them to cook bottle gourd on low flame and in the water released by it.
“Instead of red chili powder, green chili, ginger, and asafoetida (hing) must be used,” Brar added.
The chef was also taken to the bakery of the prison, where the chef asked the prisoners to start baking cakes, biscuits, and rusks and also to use an oven for baking, which is presently not in the jail.
“The celebrity chef has promised to send his juniors who are experts in confectionery items and who will help prisoners bake cookies and biscuits,” said CP Tripathi, Jailor, Lucknow Model Jail.
The jailor also said that chef and his team will also work upon the packaging, and marketing of the products.
