Chef creates 'Glasgow Mega Death' munchy box to give Australians taste of calorie-laden Caledonia

A ex-pat Scots chef is offering Australians a taste of his homeland...in a “ Mega Deathmunchy box filled with deep fried food.

Chris Orr, 39, is frying the calorie-laden culinary delight — billed the Glasgow Mega Death — Down Under at the Wee Man’s Kitchen in Melbourne.

The $50 fast-food fix — around £28 — contains Scottish deep fried favourites including pizza, pakora, sausage, chips, cheese, black pudding, haggis, and chicken wings.

The munchies are also accompanied by brown sauce and curry sauce and contain at least 2,000 calories.

When a prospective customer on social media queried the box’s contents, Chris replied: “Everything that would give you a beautiful heart attack”.

The diner’s menu also features Scottish-style desserts such as the infamous deep fried Mars Bar.

Cans of imported Irn-Bru are also on offer.

The chef, originally from Mount Florida in Glasgow, has been surprised at the response since adding the munchy box to the Wee Man’s menu, with customers coming from across Australia.

Scottish favourites such as steak pie, black pudding, and homemade square lorne sausage are also served up.

The sausages are available on “a piece” or as part of the “Great Glasgow Fry Up” according to a post by Chris on the Wee Man’s Facebook page.

Chris settled in Melbourne where he lives with his Australian partner Tamarin Young and their son, two-year-old Albie.

He returned eight years ago after first visiting in 2003 while travelling the world and opened Wee Man’s Kitchen at the Tallboy and Moose pub in 2017.

The Scot had previously worked as a chef at a number of well-known restaurants in Glasgow.

He loves his home city and deep fried food and the Wee Man’s menu confirms that. A portion of chips with sauce is listed as a “Glasgow Salad”.

Chris said: “Sometimes as a chef we do some crazy things! Like making Scooby snacks! Deep fried quiche with broon sauce keeping with the healthy Glasgow theme! Life’s about deep frying.”

Last year, East West Spice in Greenock put a munchy box on sale for £10 which contained; two pizza crunches, fish, two sausages, two hamburgers, onion rings, chicken nuggets, chips and fritters, and a two-litre bottle of Irn-Bru.

It was claimed to contain around 7000 calories.
