Chef at Dumfries' Globe Inn named as best in Scotland

Talented Fraser Cameron is celebrating after being named as the Young Chef of the Year.

The 24-year-old, who works at Dumfries’ Globe Inn, was unveiled by Catering Scotland as the winner of the gong during a surprise presentation at Annandale Distillery, where he also works at the coffee shop.

Winner Fraser underwent a rigorous interview stage which took place online due to the pandemic.

He told the Standard: “Usually the judges will come to the restaurant and eat the food and check out the service but because of Covid they weren’t able to do that, so we had to do an interview over Microsoft Teams.

“I was totally humbled just to be on the shortlist never mind to win the award. It’s been a difficult last year with all the restrictions and this felt like a bit of light at the end of the tunnel.”

Fraser began his bid to learn his craft when he took up a job as a dishwasher aged just 14.

That led to training at Perth College, where his hard work earned him a scholarship role which included a stint in the kitchen of the late Andrew Fairlie - known as Scotland’s only chef to hold two Michelin stars.

It was during a work experience stint at the Easterbrook Hall that Fraser first teamed up with Jonathan Brett, the man at the helm of the Globe Inn’s dining experience.
