Cheesecake voted Britain's favourite teatime treat - see full list

Crumbs! Cheesecake has been crowned the nation’s favourite teatime treat in a surprise result.

As the country gears up for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a study has revealed the underdog of the baking world has pushed the traditional Victoria sponge into third place with chocolate cake second.

The survey of 2,000 Brits saw classics like fruit cake, Battenberg and red velvet give way to modern favourites including brownies and doughnuts which made the top 10.

Recent arrival millionaire’s shortbread, retro bakes black forest gateau and jam roly poly and upmarket coffee and walnut cake all made the top 20.

According to the research, on average Brits home bake once a month and almost four in 10 are planning to rustle up a Victoria sponge to mark the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend while one in five will make a vegan option.

The nation has a soft spot for cakes with adults each scoffing an average of 72 portions a year.

Special occasions including birthdays, weddings and anniversaries were the most popular time to eat cake.

Four in 10 also cut a slice when they yearned for a sweet treat and more than a third tucked in for pure pleasure.

The study by Dr Oetker Baking found four in 10 cake fans thought English breakfast tea was the best drink to serve alongside the treat, a third preferred coffee and almost two in 10 plumped for hot chocolate.

Jen Brown, head of cake at Dr Oetker, said: “Baking is great fun, and you don’t have to be an expert to get creative in the kitchen.

“Something like a Victoria sponge or Jubilee-themed cupcakes is a great starting point - both are simple but effective and offer a wonderful way to pay tribute to the Queen.

“They’re also ideal bakes to make with friends or family, or simply as an activity to enjoy alone as a little ‘me-time’.”
