Cheese sold in Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda recalled over listeria fears

A type of cheddar cheese has been recalled over concerns it contains a deadly bacteria.

The Galloway Coloured Medium Grated Cheddar has been pulled from the shelves over concerns there is a risk of contamination from listeria.

It is sold in Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda.

No other Galloway products are known to be affected.

The bags affected have batch number 9154G53 and a best before date of 26/08/2019.

An infection from the bacteria in healthy people is usually either unnoticed or may cause very mild illness, but it can have more serious consequences for people with pre-existing health conditions and pregnant women. The recall has been issued nationwide.

Product recalls: explained

The Food Standards Agency says: "The health risk to the public remains low and individuals should only seek medical attention if they develop symptoms."

They strongly urge customers not to the eat product, and to return it to the storey they bought it from.

The manufacturer said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused. If you have any questions please contact the Galloway Team on 08000834358."
