Cheese recalled by Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco over deadly listeria bug fears

Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco have all recalled a cheese product over fears it could contain the potentially deadly listeria bug.

The supermarkets have removed the product from shelves after a recall notice was issued.

Customers are being warned not to eat the 200g Galloway Coloured Medium Grated Cheddar, produced by Lactalis McLelland.

People should instead to return the product to the store it was originally bought from, LeicestershireLive reports.

The risk assessment from the Food Standards Agency states: "The product listed above might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

"Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

"Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems."

The recall follows an outbreak of listeria, though to have been carried in sandwiches, which has led to deaths in hospitals across the UK.

It is believed that the number of deaths as a result of the recent outbreak is a total of five, one of which was in a Derby hospital.

Health secretary Matt Hancock has said that there will be "severe consequences"  if there is any evidence of wrongdoing.
