'Cheese grater' bridge gets grand reopening 20 months after it closed

Cyclists and pedestrians crossed the so-called 'cheese grater bridge' this weekend for the first time in almost two years.

The Meads Reach Bridge, on Temple Quay, was closed in September 2017 after suffering extensive damage when a lorry tried to cross it.

But the 55-metre-long structure was reopened on May 18, prior to the official ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning (May 20).

Avison Young associate Vicki Williams said her firm is “delighted” that the bridge has re-opened.

She added: “We’d like to thank users of the bridge for their patience while the repairs have been completed.

“It’s been absolutely essential that the repairs have been carried out to the highest standards by contractors expert in this type of bridge construction.

“We’re now very pleased to return the bridge to its rightful position as a popular cycle and pedestrian route.”

The repair work entailed the replacement of the stainless steel deck panels.

Built in 2008 by Niall McLaughlin Architects, the bridge - weighing 75 tonnes - links the city centre with Temple Quay and Temple Meads Station.

It was awarded a Royal Institute of British Architecture award the year after opening.
