Cheese addiction is real: study finds that cheese stimulates same part of the brain as hard drugs

If you've ever joked that you're 'addicted' to cheese, you may actually be right, as scientists from the University of Michigan have discovered that the likes of brie, cheddar and other popular options actually contain a substance that affects the brain in a similar way to hard drugs.

The researchers used the Yale Food Addiction Scale to measure participants dependence on various foods.

120 students were asked to fill in the addiction scale - which featured 35 foods - then did a second test on a further 384 students. And they discovered that the most addictive foods on the scale all contained (yes, you guessed it) cheese.

Like other dairy products, cheese contains casein, which can trigger the brain’s opioid receptors.

The researchers said: "The current study provides preliminary evidence that not all foods are equally implicated in addictive-like eating behavior, and highly processed foods, which may share characteristics with drugs of abuse (e.g. high dose, rapid rate of absorption) appear to be particularly associated with 'food addiction'."

We're looking forward to the next instalment of Trainspotting, where Renton refuses to give up his Christmas cheeseboard and has to be chased down Princes Street by Sickboy.
