Cheers! Rutherglen's Old Oak Inn crowned best boozer in South Lanarkshire

By Jonathan Geddes

A Rutherglen pub has been crowned the best boozer in South Lanarkshire at a top awards ceremony.

The Old Oak Inn was awarded the honour at the National Pub and Bar awards.

The popular boozer on Calderwood Road was recognised for its overall retail excellence, best practice and individual entrepreneurship, and came out on top ahead of their competitors across the region.

That earned a spot on the shortlist for the best pub in the Scotland wide section, where the Old Oak Inn was edged out.

Pub boss Craig Speirs had double reason to celebrate, as his Motherwell boozer the Electric Bar took the top prize for North Lanarkshire too.

He told Lanarkshire Live: "Danielle Boyle, the pub manager, has built a great team and a great pub over the past couple of years, during some really difficult times for the whole industry.

"The awards are initially based on the feedback you get for customer reviews, and then the judging panel take it from there.

"It's always down to the staff when you get an award like this because they must make sure that the customer service is good and that people can relax, enjoy themselves and be happy when they are there."

Pub manager Danielle has run the Old Oak Inn for the past two years and has a team of nine bar staff.

She told us that she too was delighted to get the honour.

Danielle added: "We're all really pleased and it was a nice surprise to receive it. It's not been easy trying to cope with Covid, but we just try and make the pub as welcoming as it can be."
