Cheering crowd films woman being beaten by man for having sex outside marriage

Cheering crowds filmed the public caning of a woman who was being punished for having sex outside of marriage.

A video of the brutal event shows the woman kneeling on the floor dressed in a white veil as a man cloaked in black with his head covered stands above her.

Men attending the event in the city of Banda Aceh, in Indonesia's Aceh province, hold out their phones to record as the official, known as an 'aogojo', brings the cane down on her back.

Such public whippings are common for crimes including gambling, drinking alcohol, having homosexual sex and having sex before marriage.

Having adopted a form of Sharia Law following its 2001 autonomy, the practice of caning the upper back of offenders has been practiced in Aceh.

It is the only province in the country that allows flogging.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is expected to win reelection when the country goes to the polls on Wednesday, has condemned public canings and has called for them to come to an end.

Despite the government of Aceh ruling that all such beatings would be held in prisons in 2018, some local authorities have continued the public practice, The Sun reported.

Unmarried couples whipped for 'cuddling, holding hands or having sex' in Indonesia

Many Muslim-majority countries use judicial corporal punishment, such as United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, northern Nigeria and Yemen.

While it is outlawed in all Western countries, it is prevalent in some non-Muslim majority states such as Barbados, Ecuador and Singapore.

Around 98 per cent of Banda Aceh residents are Muslim.

A 100-stroke punishment is reserved for the most severe crimes in the region.

In a set of photos taken at the grizzly event two women were captured escorting the terrified looking woman as she makes her way to the stage.

A similar spectacle took place in the city earlier this month when another woman was caned.

She was one of 12 people arrested among six unmarried couples caught during a raid on a local hotel late last year.

The province has been criticised by human rights watchdogs including Amnesty International, which last year condemned the canings.

The group said some of those flogged included unmarried couples punished for showing affection in public.

Two men were last year whipped with canes 100 times each after being caught having sex with underage girls.

Earlier this year a teen couple were flogged in Banda Aceh for cuddling in public.

An audience gathered to watch and jeer as they were punished for being found guilty of what is considered a 'moral crime' under Sharia law.
