Cheerful new Northern Quarter mural welcomes re-opening of Manchester city centre

A cheerful new mural welcoming people back to Manchester city centre has appeared in the Northern Quarter.

The artwork - titled ‘Hello again’ - was created to celebrate the reopening of hospitality venues and shops this week (April 12).

Artist Oskar with a K says he wanted to create ‘something bold’ after so long in lockdown.

The colourful image depicts the words ‘Hello again’ in large bold type.

Oskar has also included a chart “as an indicator of the decline in (Covid) rates” on April 12, 2021.

He says: “I painted this on Friday in the lull right before this lockdown ended.

“I really just wanted to do something bold, welcoming people back to the Northern Quarter after such a long winter.

“You can see some blue sun rays on the left hand side of the piece, and on the right hand side I have put the covid rates chart as of the 12th of April, just as a nod to how far we've come really.

“It took me from 11-6pm, but that included plenty of lovely chats with curious Mancunians.”

The piece has been painted on a wall of a former toilet block, on the corner of Tib Street and Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter.

It sits on the opposite side to a recently completed mural of late Captain Tom Moore.

Sir Tom walked 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday to raise more than £30 million for NHS Charities Together.

He died on February 2 this year after testing positive for Covid-19.

Street artist Akse-P19 spent two days working on the mural back in March.
