Cheeky Ryan Tubridy in stitches as he pokes fun at Dr Tony Holohan on RTE show over Christmas message

"Good man, Tony Holohan."

Ryan Tubridy doesn't always weigh in on public health announcements – but this morning he was left giggling by a message delivered to the children of Ireland by the Chief Medical Officer.

Tubs was audibly amused as he listened in to a press briefing from Dr Tony Holohan, with the health boss promising Santa will be able to visit children "who are good."

The RTE host giggled: "I love that. He stays in the same tone of voice. He could be telling you that we're all doomed, but he still sounds the same."

Tubridy's reaction came after Dr Holohan told kids around the country that Santa "is planning ahead, just like the rest of us, to make sure this is as safe a Christmas as possible."

He added: "We know that he'll take all the necessary measures.

"It'll be safe for Santa to come and visit the houses of the children who are good, and those who are doing their homework, and who are helping around the house, and not fighting with their brothers and sisters.

"The important thing for kids now to do is to do their preparations – to write their letters, keep doing their homework, and Santa will come."

On radio, Tubridy said Dr Holohan had "added a bit of meat to the bone" of his normal press conferences, but hadn't quite managed to break out of his quiet tone of voice.

But he said the story of children this Christmas is among the "good news" to come out of this year, hailing kids around the country for the efforts they've made amid the pandemic.

He praised the "utter brilliance" of their adaption to a new way of living, weeks after offering a platform to many of them on the Late Late Toy Show.
