Cheddar Reservoir forced to close after 300 people break safety rules in just four hours

A beauty spot on the outskirts of Bristol has been forced to close to the public on Friday (August 7) after 300 people broke safety rules in just four hours.

Bosses at Cheddar Reservoir said the attraction could remain shut for the whole weekend, when temperatures are expected to peak at 29C.

During spells of hot weather earlier this summer, tourists flouted rules against swimming in the reservoir.

And chiefs now fear someone could lose their life if they continue to ignore rules against entering the water.

Visitors also blighted the area with litter left at the lakeside.

From Friday, car parks will be locked and barriers will be erected to prevent access.

A spokesperson said: "The decision to close the reservoir follows a huge spike in anti-social behaviour, where Bristol Water spoke to over 300 people breaking safety rules in a four-hour period.

"The decision was made to ensure that nobody loses their life at Cheddar Reservoir as it is never safe to swim in reservoirs.

"It is possible Cheddar Reservoir will also be closed over the weekend period, we’re waiting until Thursday to confirm to allow for a more accurate weather forecast."

The beauty spot was also closed last Friday - the hottest day of the year so far - because of safety concerns.
